Clarifying FIRMettes
FEMA's online Map Service Center (MSC) is the official government headquarters for information about
the digital and paper flood hazard mapping products created in support of the NFIP.
The MSC offers an array of services, from viewing all current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) panels
effective for the U.S. and its territories, to creating downloadable FIRMettes. Following are answers
to some of the questions that the MSC frequently receives about FIRMettes.
What exactly is a FIRMette?
A FIRMette is an 8.5 x 11 inch, full-scale section of a FIRM that you create yourself online by
selecting the desired area from an image of a flood map. The FIRMette also includes the map title
block, north arrow, and scale bar.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for making a FIRMette; you simply "point and click."
Can I use a FIRMette to determine the premium rate for a building?
Yes, because a FIRMette is a full-scale section of an official FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map, it
has the same legal status as the normal size maps and can be used for all aspects of the NFIP,
including floodplain management, flood insurance, and enforcement of mandatory flood insurance
purchase requirements.
How do I create a FIRMette?
Visit
www.fema.gov/media/fhm/lomrf/mschowmakefirmette.pdf and follow the instructions. This webpage
can be downloaded or the instructions printed, if needed.
Do you have more questions about FIRMettes? If so, send the MSC an email message
(FEMA-MSCservice@dhs.gov) or call with
your questions (800-358-9616).
