Just the Facts

Are you looking for informative, one-page publications you can distribute to promote awareness of flood risk, preparation, and response? Five fact sheets in the online FEMA Library just might fill the bill.

Fact Sheet – Hurricane (FEMA 554)

Presents several key statistics regarding the deadly 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons and suggests four essential actions residents in areas vulnerable to hurricanes can take to prepare themselves for flooding.

Fact Sheet – Floods (FEMA 555)

Addresses riverine flooding, flash flooding, tropical cyclones, and dam/levee failure. It also discusses the dangers of driving through flooded areas. Included is information about what to do before, during, and after a flood.

Fact Sheet – Thunderstorms (FEMA 557)

Provides information about lightning, flooding, and tornadoes resulting from thunderstorms. Included is information about the development of thunderstorms, presence of lightning, public warning terminology, and recommendations for what to do before, during, and after a thunderstorm to protect life and property.

Fact Sheet – Winter Storm (FEMA 558)

Addresses the hazards of heavy snowfall, extreme cold, flooding, and storm surge, any of which can accompany winter storms. Topics include knowing the risk and what to do before, during, and after a winter storm.

Fact Sheet – Tsunami (FEMA 560)

A tsunami is a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteorite. This fact sheet describes how tsunamis develop and move hundreds of miles per hour in the open ocean before smashing into land with waves of 100 feet or higher. It also explains each of the public warning terms (advisory, watch, warning) and what to do when one of these has been issued.

Download or Order Print Copies

These and other fact sheets are accessible at no cost through the online FEMA Library or by contacting the FEMA Distribution Center at 1-800-480-2520 and asking for them by title or document number.
