The National Flood Conference 2010 - Awards
Private Sector Partners Recognized For Special Flood Insurance Achievements at 2010 National Flood Conference
Washington, DC -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has recognized several outstanding insurance and lending industry partners with special awards for their contributions to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
The Acting Federal Insurance Administrator, Edward L. Connor, presented the awards at the 2010 National Flood Conference held April 11-14 in San Diego, California. The NFC 2010 was attended by nearly 750 representatives of the banking and insurance industries, flood zone determination companies, realtors, local and state officials, FEMA and other Federal officials.
FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate was also in attendance, giving a riveting speech on the importance of mitigation in serving and protecting American families.
The following awards were presented to private sector partners for their accomplishments in promoting flood insurance:
The Agency of the Year Award was given to three insurance agencies that displayed innovative marketing strategies, increased their flood portfolios and actively promoted flood insurance awareness. The winners were McMahon & Hadder Insurance, Inc of Pensacola, FL, PEMCO Insurance Agency of Seattle WA, and Millhiser Smith Agency of Cedar Rapids, IA.
The Administrator's Club Award goes to companies selling and servicing federally backed flood insurance that have achieved significant growth in new policies. Winners are divided into five groups, designated as Group A through E. Each group represents a policy base threshold.
The Group A award, which goes to the Write Your Own Company with over 74,000 policies in force showing the greatest growth in policies, went to USAA.
The Group B award, which represents companies with 15,000 to 74,000 policies in force, went to the California State Automotive Association.
The Group C award, which represents companies with 5,000 to 15,000 policies in force, went to Sunshine State Insurance Company.
The Group D award, which represents companies with 1,000 to 5,000 policies in force, went to First Protective Insurance Company.
The
Group E award, which represents companies with less than 1000 policies in force, went to First Community Insurance Company.
The Administrator’s Cup Award, which goes to the insurance company with more than 2,000 policies that achieved the highest policy growth percentage, went to First Protective Insurance Company.
The Administrator's Quill Award recognizes the insurance company writing the highest number of policies within the year regardless of percentage. This year’s winner was First Community Insurance Company.
This year also marked the second presentation of the FloodSmart Award. The goal of the FloodSmart marketing campaign is to promote the National Flood Insurance Program, raise awareness of the dangers of flooding, and to convince homeowners to protect themselves with flood insurance. The FloodSmart Award recognizes the person who has done the most to meet these objectives in their own community. This year’s winner was Brian Berend, of Farmers Insurance – Berend Agency in Auburn, WA.
Additionally, William H. White of Freeport, New York, was named the first ever Community Rating System (CRS) Award for Excellence recipient. This is the first time the NFIP has recognized an individual who demonstrates outstanding accomplishments in advancing floodplain management and mitigation in CRS communities. The award is intended to raise awareness and mutual support for flood insurance and mitigation between local government and community-based agents.
FEMA, as a matter of policy, does not endorse any of the businesses that received awards.
The U.S. Congress established the NFIP in 1968 to make flood insurance available to property owners in communities that adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinances to reduce future flood losses by regulating new construction.
